ALLICE meeting held at Cobbetts in Birmingham on Wednesday 12 December 2007.
Caroline Covington presented the treasurers annual report. The report was correct as of September 2007, and does not include membership subscriptions for 2007/2008. ALLICE's bank account remains healthy - largely because firms did not charge for catering at meetings.
ALLICE will be offering a bursary to attend the BIALL conference in 2008. It will cover conference fees, but not travel or accomodation. Sue Kendall and Hilary Boucher will form the bursary sub committee, and the application criteria will broadly follow BIALL's own. Further information will appear on the weblog in due course.
ALLICE will offer a £200 Christmas charity donation. Members voted for their choice of charity, and the Saltley and Nechells Law Centre was their preferred choice.
ALLICE will be organising a new year social event on Thursday 7 March. We do not have sponsorship this year, but ALLICE will partially subsidise the event. Members voted for their choice of venue, and Zizzi was their preferred choice, with Las Iguanas in a close second place.
Jackie Hanes is looking to step down from the role of ALLICE secretary at the next meeting in March. We are therefore looking for a volunteer to take over the role. It involves organising meetings and social events, including venues, speakers, and minutes. Please contact Jackie.Hanes@lawcol.co.uk for further information.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 12 March. We have provisionally booked Laurence Bebbington to talk about digital copyright, but we do not have a venue to host the meeting. Please contact Jackie.Hanes@lawcol.co.uk if you are interesting in hosting the next meeting.
We have also approached the European Information Association about the possibility of them running a training event in Birmingham. They are open to the idea, but would like more information on the type of event we require.

ASLIB: Employability Workshop
ASLIB Midlands are organising an Employability workshop on Thursday 8 November at Birmingham Central Library attached. The workshop is aimed at anyone who is looking for a job, whether it is for the first time, or in order to change or improve their current job. ALLICE Meeting Minutes: Wednesday 3 October
ALLICE Meeting held at Needham and James in Birmingham on Wednesday 3rd October 2007
1. New members
We would like to welcome the following new members: Barry Vickery (7Side), Zoe Durrant (Cobbetts), Dipti Gohil, Mandy Hulme, Toyin Olanrewaju (Eversheds), and Louise Bowler (Wragges).
2. Membership subscription renewals 2007/2008
Caroline Covington sent Subscription Renewal Invoices in September. Please ensure that invoices are returned and payments are received by Friday 12 October. A new members list will be sent out afterwards.
3. ALLICE conference bursary update
Hilary Boucher and Sue Kendall volunteered to form a conference bursary committee. They will be meeting shortly, and aim to develop selection criteria by the end of the year. They both welcome any comments and suggestions you might have.
4. Birmingham Law Society Library update
Hazel Hewison and Pat Pritchard provided an update on the Birmingham Law Society Library. Members were thanked for their responses to the recent survey. We were warned that the future of the Library is uncertain. Many members are concerned about the possibility of closure. They are frequent users of the service, and have reduced their own collections on the basis of availability via the Birmingham Law Society Library.
There is a meeting at 4.30pm on Tuesday 16 October at the Birmingham Law Society. It has not been widely publicised but Birmingham Law Society members are encouraged to attend. We also discussed organising a petition to Save the Birmingham Library Society Library. However, to observe formal protocol, this will now be delayed until after the meeting.

6. UK Statute Law Database demonstration
We welcomed Clare Allison and Norman Hodgett of the Statutory Publications Office who spoke to us about the UK Statute Law Database (http://www.statutelaw.gov.uk).
The UK Statute Law Database is a publicly available collection of primary UK legislation. It was launched in December 2006, after 18 years in the planning. It contains the revised text of primary legislation, including useful annotations as to start date and extent. It also includes historic versions of legislation at a given point in time. It has a very flexible search engine, enabling users to search by title, citation and subject, and also date and extent. It has become an increasingly popular tool, with 100,000+ users in August. It has faced criticism for containing out of date legislation. In the future, the first priority is to complete updating the primary legislation, and the second priority is to carry revised secondary legislation.
Some members questioned the waiver of crown copyright for commercial use. Norman said that the information on the OPSI website was misleading, and confirmed that the UK Statute Law Database did waive crown copyright for commercial use.
All members were given a UK Statute Law Database user guide. An electronic copy is also available for members who were not able to attend the meeting. Please contact Jackie Hanes for further information.

We would like to welcome Andrew Clarke from Harvey Ingram LLP.
2. Union Serials List
We would like to thank Carol Wilson for her hard work compiling this years Union List.
3. ALLICE Weblog
The ALLICE Weblog is available at http://allicelawlib.blogspot.com/. All members are invited to contribute to the Blog, but this does require registration using a Google account.
4. BIALL Conference Bursary
We are considering offering a bursary for a member to attend the next BIALL conference in 2008. The bursary would be similar to that offered by BIALL. We hope that it will make the conference accessible to ALLICE members who would not normally be able to attend. Applications would be judged by an independent bursary committee.
5. Summer Social
We are planning to hold another social event on Thursday 16 August. Caroline Mosley will send further details by email nearer the time.

The next meetings are planning for Wednesday 3 October and Wednesday 12 December. The meetings do not currently have venues, so we are looking for volunteers to host the meetings.

Hazel Hewison explained that Birmingham Law Society is currently reviewing the current use and future of their library service. She is planning to survey library members, but also requested comments from ALLICE.

Our agenda had included a talk from Michael Maher, who was to present the findings of a law library benchmarking survey conducted by BRILL (Bristol regional law library group). Unfortunately Michael had to cancel at short notice, but we were intrigued by his survey, and hope to invite him to another meeting.
